London:

The UK government wasted £ 37billion heavily on a test and traceability program that failed to control the spread of Covid-19 last year, a report from lawmakers said today.

The government and its inexperienced program official Dido Harding have shown “indefatigable confidence,” said the chairman of the House of Commons public accounts committee.

“But in the end he massively over-promised for what he delivered and it was mind-boggling amounts of money,” opposition Labor Party Meg Hillier told BBC radio.

“This is one of the biggest concerns – it’s almost like the taxpayer is an ATM. This lack of respect for taxpayer funding is a real concern for us as a committee,” he said. she declared.

When the pandemic erupted early last year, Britain attempted to create a mass program from scratch to test new cases and trace those infected.

But its workload quickly exploded and the country now has the second-largest death toll in Europe, behind Russia.

The MPs report said Harding and the government had relied too much on expensive external contractors instead of existing networks of the state-run National Health Service.

Use of the services offered by the program was “variable” and “only a minority of people with symptoms of Covid-19 get tested,” according to the report.

Overall, he concluded, the program “has failed to meet its primary objective of helping to break the chains of transmission of Covid-19 and allowing people to return to a more normal lifestyle” .

The government has defended the testing program, insisting that more people are now receiving tests than in any other European country.

Jenny Harries, head of the UK Health Security Agency, said she “is saving lives every day and helping us fight Covid-19 by breaking chains of transmission and spotting epidemics wherever they exist”.
