Tamilians object to ‘stereotyping’ in Meenakshi Sundareshwar trailer: ‘Please leave us alone’

Dharma Productions released the Meenakshi Sundareshwar trailer on Wednesday, but not everyone is happy with it.

The Meenakshi Sundareshwar teaser was released on Wednesday. It stars Sanya Malhotra and Abhimanyu Dassani as a young couple in Tamil Nadu, trying to make their relationship work from a distance.

However, after the trailer came out, many Tamils objected to how their culture was once again stereotyped by a Hindi movie. Some have mentioned that Tamils don’t “talk like that” or don’t have a shrine for actor Rajinikanth in their home.

“Meenakshi Sundareshwar really! it may be high time for #karanjohar or any director could be mistaken for #tamilien for such a scenario! You should get into the nuance of our very traditions. it can’t be bogus every time! Whether it’s #twostates, you let us down! #hindicinema #Bollywood is growing, ”one person wrote on Twitter. “Bollywood, I have a question for you – why can’t you just leave us alone,” another person asked.

“I don’t know when Bollywood realizes that not all Tamils are Brahmins. Not all Tamils are vegetable eaters. Even the Brahmins will not dress and talk like this nowadays. And not all Tamil songs are folk songs. And stop your obsession with our superstar, ”one tweet read. “Less than 10 seconds into the video and I already know they didn’t do any research,” one person wrote, commenting on the wedding scene from the teaser.

“Insert Tamil songs, Tamil icons and Tamil culture (grossly stereotypical) to get eyes, but the characters only speak Hindi !!” Chennai is only a 2 hour flight from Bombay, a single visit would have made manufacturers realize how an atrocity it is, ”another tweet read.

While many Twitter users were unhappy, others praised Sanya and Abhimanyu and are looking forward to the film. “Great teaser that gives me a real experience of great content,” wrote one. “It will be the best film. Can’t wait to be Nov 5 to watch this, ”wrote another.

Directed by Vivek Soni, Meenakshi Sundareshwar is set to hit Netflix on November 5. It is produced under the banner of Karan Johar, Dharmatic Entertainment.
