Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed his anguish at the loss of life in Uttarakhand due to heavy rains and noted that relief operations are underway to help those affected.

Another 23 people were killed in the state on Tuesday as houses collapsed due to relentless rains in various parts of the state, leaving many trapped under the debris.

The death toll now stands at 34, with the Kumaon region most affected. Five deaths were reported Monday, according to the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC).

Prime Minister Modi tweeted: “I am distressed by the loss of life due to heavy rains in parts of Uttarakhand. May the injured recover soon. Rescue operations are underway to help those affected. I pray for the safety and well-being of all. “

Earlier today, the prime minister met with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to take stock of the situation in the state.

The chief minister briefed Modi on the situation and said the administration was fully alert. Prime Minister Modi assured Mr. Dhami of all the help needed to deal with the situation.
