Philippines Eases Capital’s Curbs, Allows Quarantine-Free Entry

Fully vaccinated international travelers from areas classified as ‘green’ or low risk will no longer be required to undergo a facility quarantine, if they provide a negative Covid-19 test result taken within 72 hours of their departure.

The Philippines is easing restrictions on viruses, allowing more businesses in the capital to reopen from October 16 and relax quarantine rules for vaccinated travelers.

Metro Manila, which accounts for a third of the country’s economic output, will switch to a more flexible Alert Level 3 from October 16 to 31, presidential spokesman Harry Roque said in a statement. Most businesses are allowed to operate at full capacity, while casinos, spas and indoor tourist attractions can reopen at 30% capacity, based on previous government guidelines. More cities and provinces outside the capital have also been placed under a more flexible form of quarantine.

The Philippines, which fell to last place in Bloomberg’s Covid resilience ranking late last month, has seen infections drop to less than 9,000 in recent days, hitting a two-month low. Travel rules for residents have been relaxed as the economy struggles to recover from the pandemic.

The Southeast Asian nation has opened up vaccination to all adults and will begin vaccinating minors this week, as it tries to keep pace with its neighbors on vaccine rollouts. Almost 22% of the population is fully vaccinated.
