Minnesota Vikings vs. Seattle Seahawks

Point spread: +2.0

Popularity: 24%

Category: unpopular throw

The Vikings have lost two heartbreaking games so far this season, dropping a Week 1 overtime game against Cincinnati and then missing a potential game-winning goal in Arizona. The public are giving them little chance against Seattle at home even though this one is one of the smallest gaps in Week 2.

You can differentiate your entry from the others by taking on the very unpopular Vikings here in a fairly even game. This is a very compelling choice in weekly prize pools where you only have a small number of differentiation options, although you have to be more selective about the risks you take in season prize pools.

Miami Dolphins at Las Vegas Raiders

Point spread: +3.5

Popularity: 7%

Category: Value bet in weekly prize pools

Recency bias seems to drive the public here. Miami was crushed at home by Buffalo as quarterback Tua Tagovailoa left the game early with a rib injury. Meanwhile, the Raiders started 2-0 with narrow wins over the Ravens and Steelers.

Since Tuesday, Tagovailoa has been ‘hand in hand’ with the rib injury, and that’s something to watch out for before making your final choice. But the popularity of the Dolphins’ pick is out of control given the relative differences between these two teams. The Raiders have just finished a game where the Steelers knocked out three of their best defensive players (after TJ Watt left with an injury in the second quarter) and Derek Carr had a blast.

Miami is coming off a poor performance which shouldn’t reflect its overall quality this season. The Dolphins surrendered just 314 yards to Buffalo in the loss, and their offense could return Tagovailoa and WR Will Fuller V to debut for the Dolphins.

Again, it can be a little risky to take Miami in a pool all season, but the Ends present great risk / reward value in a weekly contest.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Green Bay Packers

Point spread: -3.5

Popularity: 63%

Category: Favorite Value

Enough of the public is backing Green Bay this week to make the 49ers a valuable game in the favorite role. The Packers are coming off a bigger-than-expected win over Detroit in a prime-time game, but their defense still has some major question marks after two weeks. They also had the advantage of a big save in the fourth and a 2-0 advantage on turnover.

Choosing the 49ers should be a staple strategy in a variety of pools, as they give you a chance to take the favorite when almost 40% of a typical pool goes the other way.

Carolina Panthers vs. Houston Texans

Point spread: -7.5

Popularity: 88%

Category: Reasonable Price Biggest Favorite

The Panthers are one of the big favorites this week, but the public didn’t quite get it. Additionally, QB Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) will miss this game and rookie Davis Mills will start as a quarterback.

According to our models, Carolina has the third highest winning odds this week, but only the 10th highest pick popularity in the selection pools. Eight teams are chosen by over 90% of the public, and Carolina is not one of them. As a result, you can achieve some differentiation in Trust Pools by placing Carolina as a very high value Trust Point set this week.

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Dallas Cowboys

Point spread: +4.0

Popularity: 14%

Category: Value bet in weekly prize pools

Finally, another value bet for risk takers. The Eagles played solid football in the first two games, winning big in Atlanta and playing a close game with San Francisco.

Dallas are a beloved team of the public, and right now, the public is riding high on the Cowboys. However, our research has shown that home ground advantage doesn’t seem to be worth much in NFC East rivalry games, and this location could be riskier for Dallas than many people realize. This is the riskiest game out of the five we’ve listed, so be aware of that fact.
