New Delhi:

A Dominican magistrate court sent businessman Mehul Choksi to state prison on Thursday, his lawyer in India said, but added that he will remain in hospital as his medical condition “deteriorated.”

The diamond dealer was previously in police custody.

“Yes, the police custody has been changed to prison, but he will remain in the hospital as his health has deteriorated,” said lawyer Vijay Aggarwal.

The fact is seen as a ray of hope for India, which has turned to the Dominican High Court seeking to be implemented as a party in the case brought by Choksi’s lawyers, whose bail statement was previously rejected.

Choksi is wanted in India in a loan fraud case worth approximately 13.5 billion rupees at the state-run National Bank of Punjab.
